Which is the first Sea Cruise Ship?
The cruise ship has always been a symbol of wealth and luxury, and you can often tell a lot about what certain eras were like due to the size and design of their ships. From the decadent first cruise ships of the early 20th century, to the mega-ships of today that are more like small villages on the sea, the cruise ship has gone through many different styles to keep up with the needs of holidaymakers.
First Cruise Ship Prinzessin Victoria Luise
Considered to be the first purpose-built cruise ship, the Prinzessin Victoria Luise launched on June 29th, 1900.
Although many companies already offered "pleasure voyages" where travelers could take long trips through the Mediterranean and Orient, these were run on regular passenger
ships that didn't have much in the way of facilities. Shipping magnate Albert Ballin realized the potential of offering a more comfortable experience,
with first class staterooms and spaces for entertaining and socializing.
Launched on 29 June 1900, she served with HAPAG of some 4,409 gross register tons (GRT) until 16 December 1906 after being accidentally grounded
off Jamaica. Although the passengers were rescued, the captain locked himself in his cabin and shot himself.
Throughout history, there have been some iconic cruise ships.
The world's most famous historic cruise ships include:
the Queen Mary, the Titanic, the Oasis of the Seas, the SS United States, and the
Carnival Mardi Gras, to name a few.
These historic cruise ships have become famous for their amenities, their stories, and even their alleged hauntings.

Rex under attack On 8 Sept. 1944 off Koper Slovenia
Rex rolled onto the port side, burned for four days
SS Rex was an Italian ocean liner launched in 1931.
Rex operated transatlantic crossings from Italy with its running mate, Conte di Savoia prior to the outbreak of the Second World War.
Rex maintained a commercial service in the Mediterranean Sea for eight years, but when Italy entered the war in June 1940 Rex was laid up for
safe-keeping.
On 8 September 1944, off Koper, Slovenia, Rex was hit by cannon fire and 123 rockets launched by Royal Air Force aircraft, caught fire from
bow to stern. She rolled onto the port side, burned for four days, and sank in shallow water. The ship was broken up in situ in 1950.

RMS Titanic, the most famous ship for never making her destination, was the largest cruise ship of its time. The name Titanic derives from the
Titans of Greek mythology. The Titanic was built in Ireland at the Harland and Wolff shipyard. It was considered to be the most developed ship of
that era.
However, the Titanic, famously described as "unsinkable", unfortunately sank after colliding against an iceberg in its maiden
voyage - from Southampton to New York City - on 14 April 1912, in the North Atlantic Ocean. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard,
more than 1,500 died, making it the deadliest sinking of a single ship up to that time.
RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was launched by the Cunard Line in 1906 and that held the Blue Riband appellation for the fastest
Atlantic crossing in 1908. It was briefly the world's largest passenger ship until the completion of the Mauretania three months later.
She was sunk on her 202nd trans-Atlantic crossing, on 7 May 1915, by a German U-boat 11 miles (18 km) off the southern coast of Ireland,
killing 1,198 passengers and crew.
The RMS Aquitania was in service from 1914 until 1950, and was often considered one of the most beautiful
cruise ships on the seas at this time. It was built by Cunard to rival the luxury ships of the White Star line, such as the Titanic, with a slower,
more luxurious ship for comfortable travelling. After the Titanic sank, the RMS Aquitania improved its safety measures, becoming the first ship to
have enough lifeboats for all passengers. However, it was the stylish interior that wooed passengers, and using the same designers as those who
decorated the Ritz Hotels in London allowed them to create a truly luxurious experience.
The SS Andrea Doria Italian Ocean liner sank after colliding against the Swedish ship MS Stockholm in July 1956, killing 46 people. The
vessel, which had 1,134 passengers and 572 crew members on board, was en route to New York City when it met with one of the most infamous maritime
disasters in history.
The Queen Elizabeth 2 set the standard for luxury cruising for nearly 40 years, from its launch in 1969, until its final journey from Southampton
to Dubai in 2008. The 1960s saw cheaper and faster flights, which meant that travelling by boat was in decline, so luxurious cruises were seen as
a way to lure people back.
In its early days, the Queen Elizabeth 2 offered a comfortable way to journey from Southampton to New York, with the journey taking four days.
During the Falklands War, the ship was converted for military service, with lounges turned into dorms, carpets covered in hardboard, and helicopter
pads installed. It was then converted from steam power to diesel for the modern era, and was often refurbished to keep its luxury appeal. Since its
final voyage, there have been many plans for this grand ship, such as the possibility of turning it into a luxurious hotel in Dubai.
The Queen Mary 2 ship was officially named by Queen Elizabeth II in 2004 after the first RMS Queen Mary of 1936. Queen Mary 2 is the only
transatlantic ocean liner in regular service between Southampton, England, and New York City, United States. Affectionately known as the QM2,
she carries 2.691 passengers. The ship is also used for cruising, including an annual world cruise.
